PRE-SCHOOL FAQ

When is the first day of school?

We have found that our youngest students adapt better to on-campus school when they begin earlier than the rest of the school, and have a shorter school day during the first few days. This helps them familiarise themselves with their teachers, peers, and the school environment with far less stress and tears.

How does my child access online resources like fun learning activities?

Before school reopens, you will receive login credentials for your child’s official school email ID, with which you may access the online resources. We use Google Classroom for the delivery of fun activities and learning materials. Before school begins, you will receive detailed instructions for the use of this tool. At 6 pm each day, we will be posting learning materials and suggested fun learning activities on Google Classroom which may be accessed at your convenience.

What are the tech requirements for the online resources?

As long as you have access to a smartphone, it is not mandatory for you to purchase any new devices. However, we recommend the use of the following:

  • Webcam-equipped desktop or laptop with 8GB RAM and/or smartphone or tablet running Android 5 or iOS7and above with adequate storage for educational apps
  • Internet connection of 4Mbps, with a data plan of 2GB per month
  • USB speakers are a useful add-on, but not essential

Will school-run transportation be available on the first day of school?

Yes, school transport will be available for your child from the first day of school for Nursery and Preparatory students. However, in the case of Pre nursery students, while school transport is available for pickup from home, it will not be available for drop-off after school in the first week.

The first week being a settling-in period for our first time school goers, we would like the parent(s) to drop and pick their child up from school during this week to ease separation anxiety.

A transport form will be published on the school portal, which you must complete and submit regardless of the mode of transport you wish your child to use. If you are opting for school transport, the transport manager will inform you about the pick-up and drop timings a couple of days in advance.

What are the guidelines for after-school student pick-up?

Please pick your child up from school on time. Do remember that your little one has been away from home and you for the entire school day, and will be eagerly waiting to see you. To help keep  the dispersal process smooth, please refrain from parking in front of the school gate, or asking the teachers about your child’s school day during pick up.  You can meet the teachers on a predetermined Saturday of every working month for such discussions. Please also refrain from taking to task or abusing the domestic staff who assist in the dispersal process.

It is mandatory for you to carry your school-issued Parent ID card to be able to pick your child up from school. Due to our stringent policy on child safety, we regret our inability to release your child to you without this ID card. If you have authorized someone else to pick your child up for you, please do ensure that he/she has the school-issued Escort ID card failing which we will be unable to release your child into their care. Please note that we cannot waive the need for Parent/Escort  ID simply because we recognize the parent/escort and can visually confirm their identity.

If the parent or authorized escort cannot be present for the child’s pickup, the parent must send an email to the school and provide information about the designated person who will come to pick up the child. The designated person is required to bring a government-issued identification card with them.

What are the communication channels adopted at school?

School-to-parent communication

Our primary channel for communication to parents is our online portal. We expect you to log in to the portal once a day, at your convenience, to ensure that you do not miss out on any important information or communication.  For the ease and convenience of the parent community, we also send out messages, circulars, forms, reminders, and more via the UOLO application for mobile devices. However, this is a supplemental means of communication, and it is not recommended that parents rely on this application alone. Over and above this, we may send you emails to your registered email ID as and when required. We will also be sending you a monthly preschool newsletter to update you about the activities and lessons conducted during the month.

Parent-to-school communication
Please send all queries, concerns, and information to us via email at office@innisfreehouseschool.com. Do ensure that you are sending us email from your registered email address, as our security protocols do not permit us to respond to unverified email IDs. Please do not rely on unofficial Whatsapp groups for information about your child and the school. Instead, contact us directly via email for clarifications and concerns.

When and how often can I meet my child’s class teacher?

On a predetermined Saturday of every working month between 8:40 am and 1:00 pm, the school arranges for both online and on-campus options for meetings with specific time slots for you to meet your child’s class teacher. You have the option of choosing the mode of meeting (online/on-campus) once every term, which will hold good for that entire term. We will also inform you about your time slot a week in advance, and the same slot will hold good for all monthly meetings during the term. Please ensure that you adhere to your time slot to have a meaningful and uninterrupted discussion with the teacher. In the event of your late arrival, we regret our inability to hold your slot or allot you another one considering the other waiting parents.

During these meetings, please do not get too anxious about your child’s performance, and please refrain from comparing him/her with other children. Every child is unique, and has their own special strengths. Understand and allow them to grow and evolve at their own pace.

Do I have to wait for another month to meet the class teacher if I have missed a meeting?

If for some reason you miss a meeting, please send us an email and we will arrange for the Preschool Section Head to meet you, to discuss your child’s progress. However, it will not be feasible for you to meet your child’s class teacher before the next monthly meeting.

What are the guidelines pertaining to my child’s attire and physical appearance?

Please send your child to school neatly dressed in the school uniform (T-shirt and slacks).  Any comfortable black sports shoes with Velcro straps (not laces) and brown socks may be worn. Please ensure that your child always wears comfortable, well-fitting underwear. Please be aware that sand, dirt, water, paint are part of the preschool educational experience and occasionally your child may leave school with tangible evidence of these experiences 🙂

We encourage children to comb their hair neatly and keep it off the face so that it does not obscure vision. To avoid injuries to your own child and others, we also expect that you keep your child’s nails trimmed. As a school, we believe that nail polish and makeup on young children is inappropriate and we do not permit their use.

Wearing the Student ID card every day is mandatory.

All students and  parents are issued police-mandated ID cards. To that end, prior to the start of each academic year, parents must upload to the school portal:

  • A recent photograph of the student in school uniform
  • Photographs of both parents
  • Photographs of any third party (you can authorize up to three people) who will be expected to collect your child from time to time

These photographs must be uploaded by the deadline and as per the guidelines shared in order to facilitate the timely printing of the ID cards which will be distributed on Monday, 29th May 2023 during the informal interaction.

What do I pack in my child’s school bag everyday?

As a school, our policy has always been to minimise the burden of school bags. Our preschoolers do not have to carry books to school everyday. All their books/worksheets/art and craft work are kept at school, with those pertaining to one specific subject being sent home for your perusal  each Friday. Any books or work sent home must be returned to school on the following Monday. If you fail to do so, we will be unable to send anything home the following Friday.

The school will provide stationery items such as pencils and erasers to students of Pre-nursery and Nursery. Preparatory class students will be expected to bring their own pencil boxes containing two pencils, an eraser, a sharpener and a ruler.

We expect all children to bring a snack box, a napkin and a water bottle to school every day, along with an extra set of clothes and underwear so that we can ensure that your child is clean and comfortable in case of accidental spills and soiling. Preparatory students will also need to bring their own lunch boxes. Please label all your child’s belongings to avoid misplacement.

Do I have to send snacks and lunch for my child?

Please ensure that your child has had breakfast before coming to school. Additionally, you may pack any finger food as a snack for your child, to be eaten during the short break. These are meant to be dry, light snacks, which can be eaten quickly and without spillage or mess.

Suggestions for snacks include:

  • Bite-sized pieces or thin slices of fruit/vegetables/cold cuts that can be easily handled by your child
  • Healthy buns/muffins/biscuits/crackers/savory snacks
  • Fruit or vegetable sandwiches with whole grain bread
  • Roti roll
  • Nuts and/or dried fruits
  • Bite sized pieces of cheese

Please do not send:

  • Rice/upma/poha
  • Pasta/seviyan/vermicelli/noodles/pizza
  • Paratha/idli/dosa/appam
  • Milk/tetra pack drinks

Students of Preparatory are also expected to bring a healthy packed lunch with a spoon/fork and a napkin. Ensure that you send only as much food as your child can eat comfortably, and also have time to play during the lunch break.

Suggestions for lunch include:

  • Various types of mildly spiced rice preparations like vegetable pulao/lemon rice/tomato rice/khichdi/curd rice
  • Pasta
  • Dosa/idli (cut into bite-sized pieces) and chutney
  • Idli/vermicelli/vegetable upma
  • Vegetable/paneer/potato parathas
  • Chapatis/puris/parathas
  • Assorted wraps/frankies/rolls
  • Fruit/vegetable/cheese sandwiches
  • Noodles/spaghetti

Please do not send:

  • Liquid curries (if you wish to send an item like curd/sambhar/rasam/dal/curry please ensure that it is premixed with the rice and not packed separately)
  • Juices/milk (tetra packs, packets, or otherwise)

Can my child skip school if he/she is unwell?

Yes, absolutely. While a runny nose or cold is a regular feature in the early growing years and may not require medical attention, we do not expect you to send your child to school in case of fever, difficulty in breathing, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and similar conditions when the child is uncomfortable. Apart from the fact that an unwell child cannot be an active and happy participant in class activities, this poses a risk of spread of infection to other children on campus. We request you to apply for leave on the portal about such absences. Please send your child to school only when he/she is fit to resume classes. If he/she has been suffering from a contagious illness, or from a serious issue, we expect a medical certificate certifying their fitness to resume school. The school reserves the discretion and the right to seek such a medical certificate as it deems fit.

What happens if my child falls sick at school or is injured during play?

The school has an infirmary with a qualified nurse to attend to such children immediately and administer first aid. We will inform you about such incidents and the measures taken via our school portal.

However, in emergencies like major injuries or a severe medical condition that develops at school, based on the recommendation of the staff nurse, your child will be taken to the nearest hospital for further specialised medical treatment. You will be informed immediately via phone, as well as via the school portal, and our staff will remain with your child until you arrive to take over.

How often can my child use the washrooms?

We do understand that young childrens’ washroom routines will take a little time to settle. Children are encouraged to use the dedicated preschool washrooms whenever they feel the need, even during class hours, and definitely during the snack and lunch breaks. Please encourage your child to communicate his/her toilet needs to an adult. A domestic staff member is always deployed near the washrooms to monitor and assist with washroom visits.

Important: Your child is expected to be toilet-trained by the start of the school year. The use of diapers is therefore not permitted.

Will my child be assigned homework in preschool?

At IHS, we do not believe in compartmentalizing learning into ‘classwork’ and ‘homework’. We view all academics-related tasks as learning, regardless of where these tasks are performed. Your child will therefore occasionally receive simple home-based assignments in the form of fun activities to reinforce the idea that learning can happen anywhere, and is not restricted to school alone.

Each month, we will post a maximum of 4 fun activity worksheets in Google Classroom (this helps introduce young children to the idea that technology and devices are meant for more than just entertainment.) It is not mandated that your child work on these activities at home and submit them online, hence, no deadline will be given. You are free to help your child engage with the activities as per your convenience and your child’s needs/interests, and submit them online. If you choose to submit your child’s work, the teachers will go through it and return it to you with  feedback.

How can I help my child overcome separation anxiety in the first few days of school?

It is very natural for a child to feel scared and nervous at being away from parents and having to adapt to a new environment. Though the introductory half day school system will help connect your child to his/her teachers and peers and prepare them for school, we advise you to prepare your child by speaking positively about school activities, classmates and teachers, and establishing a daily set routine for your child. When it is time to leave your child at the school gate, say good-bye, explain that you will be back soon to collect him/her, give a quick reassuring hug/kiss and leave promptly. Be prepared for tears. Do not linger, and do not worry. Your child is in the safe and experienced hands of teachers and domestic staff, and will settle down soon.

How can my child celebrate his/her birthday at school?

Birthdays are happy occasions! Your child may celebrate his/her big day by dressing in any comfortable and school-appropriate clothing, and (if you wish) distributing sweet treats or chocolates. Given the long-term health impact of the consumption of sugary foods, we restrict the distribution of sweets to the students and class teacher of your child’s section only. In the event that circumstances (eg: COVID-19) make it necessary, we might be forced to prohibit the distribution of sweets.

How can I get more information about the school?

The digital Student Handbook will give you all the information required. We advise you to go through it at length to understand our school policies and guidelines. Additionally, please visit our website.
